Studied German, Philosophy, Social Sciences and Pedagogy at RWTH Aachen and the University of Trier, Master's Diploma for Pedagogical Sciences at the University of Trier (1975)

1976: teaching and research position at the Institute for General and Empirical Educational Science at the Free University of Berlin, teaching position at TU Berlin, doctorate in educational science at the Free University of Berlin (1985)

Research visits to the USA 1986 and 1987 (through the Internship Scholarship Programme of the Center for North American Studies (ZENAF) at the Goethe-University Frankfurt a. M.) at the Philadelphia Board of Education, in cooperation with Temple University and Pennsylvania State University

1988: teaching position at the University of Osnabrück, cofounder of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück

Postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) in educational and cultural sciences at the University of Osnabrück (1994), qualification for general pedagogy, senior lecturer (1995)

Comparative intercultural research and empirical education research with a focus on migrational studies with the following topical emphases: migration, acculturation and schools, migrant families, culture-specific socialisation, intercultural education, methods and methodology of comparative cultural research

Gender studies research with a focus on educational biography, gender-specific socialisation in childhood and adolescence, coeducation and monoeducation
