Information measures and invariance for linked control systems

The project, which is part of the priority programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG) 1305 “Control theory of digitally linked dynamic systems” (http://spp-1305.atp.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/), aims to lay the mathematical foundations for the required transmission of information in digitally linked control systems. We modify concepts from symbolic and numeric dynamics and combine them with control-theoretical methods in order to use them for the analysis of the behaviour of such control systems. Our studies focus on the information which is required to achieve invariance and stabilisation. We will develop concepts which are sufficiently flexible and general so that time-variant disturbances, input output behaviour and net structure can be taken into account. We thus contribute towards understanding the connection between physical control systems and limited, time-variable communication channels. Further, we develop algorithms by applying methods of developing quantity-oriented numerics permitting the calculation of the values of proto-typical applications, which from an analytical point of view are generally inaccessible.
