Prof. Dr. Hans Ulrich Buhl

Professor

Prof. Dr. H.U. Buhl, born in 1955 in Esslingen, Germany, is Head of the Department of Information Systems Engineering & Financial Management at the University of Augsburg since August 1994. Moreover, he is the Academic Director of the Research Center Finance & Information Management funded by the Bavarian State Department in 2002. Additonally, he leads the Fraunhofer Project Group Business & Information Systems Engineering and is deputy director of the Institute for Materials Resource Management at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. From 1976 to 1981 he studied Industrial Engineering, Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Karlsruhe and Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. In 1982 he received his Dr. and in 1985 his postdoctoral qualification (PD Dr. rer. pol. habil.) at the University of Karlsruhe for his work on applying dynamic optimization to economics and to business problems. Regarding his research (predominantly in the fields of Customer Relationship Management, Integrated Enterprise Balancing, IT Governance and Value-based Process Management), Prof. Buhl was ranked Top 1% in the Management International Review-Ranking of 2004 and the “Handelsblatt BWL-Ranking” 2009 and 2012. For his achievements he was for instance appointed Fellow of the “Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V.” in 2009 and he received the IBM Service Sciences Faculty Award in 2006. 

Prof. Buhl gained practical experience amongst others from 1983-1990 in leading positions in the fields of finance, information systems and logistics at IBM Germany, Stuttgart / Sindelfingen. Prof. Buhl is Editor-in-Chief of the Scientific Journal “Wirtschaftsinformatik” and the Scientific Journal “Business & Information Systems Engineering”. Furthermore, Prof. Buhl is member of the “wissenschaftliche Kommission Wirtschaftsinformatik (WKWI)” and  “Bankbetriebslehre/Finanzierung (BAFI)” in the German Academic Association for Business Research where he exercises in different functions. Concerning the “Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI)”, he was appointed as fellow in 2009.  

Currently, Prof. Buhl is also Chairman of the Board for the Elite Graduate Program Finance & Information Management of the University of Augsburg and the Technical University of Munich funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Science. For his teaching activities, he was elected Professor of the Year 2009 (by UNICUM BERUF and KPMG) in the category Business Sciences/Law.
