Munich City

Welcome to Munich and Bavaria!

Bavarian state capital, third largest city in Germany with a population of about 1.3 million, economic hub and leisure centre, well spring for joy of life, focal point of art and culture, crossroads of history and modern times – Munich encompasses all of these aspects and many more. Commonly known as “the village of a million”, Munich (which was founded in 1158 by Henry the Lion) is famous for its strong Bavarian traditions and cosmopolitan flare. Downtown you will find some of Europe's finest museums, restaurants, theatres and cafes alongside a host of market squares and beer gardens. Also many internationally acknowledged events (for example the Oktoberfest, the Starkbierfest or the Auer Dult) take place in Munich and attract millions of tourists every year. The metropolis on the Isar River combines old Bavarian tradition and broad-minded openness toward the world, deep-rooted customs and dynamic innovation, sovereign composure and pulsation activity. Or, to quote the words of the American Author Tom Wolfe: “This is one of the most wonderful and charming cities in the world!”

Bavaria is Germany's largest and oldest state. Its perception of itself and its sovereignty have evolved from a history spanning over one thousand years. This heritage is still alive today. Although with a unique appearance of its own, Bavaria is yet inseparably linked to German and European culture. Being Germany’s southernmost state, Bavaria has always been a crossroads of trading routes to the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe. Since the Alps had never formed an impassable barrier, Bavaria was open from an early time to the influences of Mediterranean culture. They were entrenched in the Bavarian way of life, in the principle ‘Live and let live’ and in the informal sociability of its people.

In short, in everything understood as “Liberalitas Bavarica”.

Bavaria is not merely endowed with scenic beauty and a wealth of cultural monuments, nor is it just a holiday and leisure spot famed for its hospitality. Now, as before, the Free State is the top farming province of Germany and agriculture has distinctly shaped it with its cultural landscape, as well as with its traditions, mores and customs. Nevertheless, over the past decades Bavaria has transformed into a modern industrial state with an advanced economic structure. Bavaria boasts a latest-say industry, promising scientific research and efficient economy, comprising both large corporations of worldwide renown and craft trade enterprises for which quality is the supreme command. Bavaria has kept its image throughout all changes. Tradition and progress are the principle of the Free State. The twelve million inhabitants as well as the numerous visitors cherish and love this land. And as the common saying goes: “Nowhere does one live and feel better than in Bavaria”.
