The time in the maternal womb is a critical stage for fetal development and the placenta plays an important role. The innate immune system primarily overtakes tasks in tissue remodeling and angiogenesis, supporting a proper supply of the fetus with nutrients. Further, adaptive maternal immune responses during pregnancy are shaped in a way to tolerate the semi allogeneic fetus, fostering fetal growth and well-being. Both arms of the immune system can be negatively affected by environmental chemicals. In her talk, Prof. Zenclussen will give an overview about relevant mechanisms of pregnancy tolerance and introduce our recent works on the impact of environmental chemicals on fetal growth and development.
