PhD student (m/f/d), Medical Faculty

The Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Augsburg is offering a position for a

PhD student (m/f/d)

Work starts as soon as possible, but not before 1st of March 2024. The position is part time up to 65% of the regular working hours. For a start, it is limited to two years with the qualification goal of a doctorate. You will research on mechanism and functions of intramembrane proteases.

We seek enthusiastic and motivated candidates to join our team at the newly founded Institute of Theoretical Medicine in Garching, close to Munich. The Institute of Theoretical Medicine ( https://www.uni-augsburg.de/de/fakultaet/med/forschung/itm/) is a focal point for systematic basic biomedical research at the University of Augsburg.

Research at the chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ( https://www.uni-augsburg.de/en/fakultaet/med/profs/biochemie/) focuses on intramembrane proteases. They are of crucial importance for the development and diagnosis of numerous diseases. We are particularly interested in the SPP/SPPL proteases, a family of intramembrane aspartyl proteases and how they impact on tumor development and metastasis as well as on sugar metabolism and, thus, on possible effects linked to diabetes. In this context, it is also of great importance to understand how these proteases act mechanistically and how their subcellular trafficking is mediated. Thus, the PhD project will on the one hand focus on specific mechanistic aspects of these proteases but also continue on understanding how SPP/SPPL proteases are regulated under physiological and pathological conditions.
