Short description of the travel purpose
Research stay: Steep slope agriculture under changing environmental conditions in the Rwenzori, Uganda
The travel scholarship funded the research stay in Uganda for a period of five weeks. The research project aimed to investigate the societal drivers of steep-slope agriculture in the Rwenzori mountains in western Uganda. The project hypothesises that the high birth rates, migration patterns driven by political instability coupled with the effects of climate change have forced farmers to retreat into the steep slopes of the Rwenzori mountains. Data was collected through expert interviews and community engagements to test this hypothesis. During the stay, Triphine met with different stakeholders at various levels for current and future collaborations. She also had a presentation at Makerere University, Department of Geography about the research project which enabled her get feedback and contacts of other stakeholders that were contacted for the study.
The data collected is being used to develop PhD publications which will contribute to the project’s academic and policy output and overall career advancement.
