International Collaboration on Nonlinear Dynamic PDEs

The project was jointly submitted to the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Over the next two years, both organisations will support the collaboration between the University of Augsburg and Heriot-Watt University. CAAPS serves as the organisational unit on the German side. The initiative aims to advance research on nonlinear dynamic partial differential equations (PDEs), foster international collaboration and support early-career researchers.

Nonlinear dynamic PDEs are of importance in many areas of science and engineering, yet their analysis and numerical simulation remain highly challenging. The collaboration brings together the complementary expertise of the Augsburg and Edinburgh research groups in spatial discretisation, time integration, structure-preserving methods and quantum-inspired algorithms.

Research Exchange and Early-Career Collaboration

As part of the project, two PhD students and two master’s students from Augsburg will spend four weeks in Edinburgh working on their doctoral and master’s theses under the supervision of the Scotish group. The exchange will provide valuable international research experience, strengthen academic networks, and enable the students to benefit from the partner group’s expertise. Reciprocal research visits are also planned. In addition, the collaboration is expected to result in joint publications involving early-career researchers.

The exchange activities have already begun. In April, Brian Hennessy, a PhD student from Heriot-Watt University, visited Augsburg for a research stay. PhD student Matthias Deiml from Augsburg is currently conducting research in Edinburgh, whilst Nicole Titze, a master’s student, is scheduled to join the partner group in Scotland in September. These visits further strengthen the collaboration on the project’s research topics and provide valuable opportunities for scientific exchange and international networking.
