ShanghaiRanking 2026: Mathematics at Augsburg in the Top 150 Worldwide
The Institute of Mathematics at the University of Augsburg belongs to the twelve highest-ranked locations for mathematics in Germany.
Mathematics at the University of Augsburg belongs to a group of international top performers in its discipline. In the current Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) from the ShanghaiRanking, mathematics at Augsburg counts among the top 150 locations worldwide for mathematics and could in comparison to the previous year clearly improve its position. It is therefore one of the twelve highest-ranked locations in Germany. The internationally closely monitored Shanghai Academic Subject Ranking provides a yearly ranking of 20,000 subjects at approximately 2,000 universities in around 100 countries in 57 disciplines in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine, and the social sciences. The top 500 institutions worldwide per subject are listed. GRAS is not based on surveys but rather on independently collected objective indicators. To this, belong publications in leading academic journals, whose citations in international comparison have an impact, the share of international collaborations, as well as awards and editorial roles undertaken by participating researchers. The improved position shows that mathematics at Augsburg has been able to improve in all areas. The number of publications in excellent, internationally renowned journals has shown the strongest growth. As many of the institute’s projects have arisen out of close cooperation with other disciplines and research centres, the result is also simultaneously a success for the University of Augsburg as a whole. “We are delighted by this result, as it shows what our researchers have established over the last few years,” says Prof. Jan-Frederick Pietschmann, managing director of the Institute of Mathematics. “We are particularly delighted that we have once again clearly improved in international comparison. It shows that top-level research in mathematics has occurred in Augsburg, which also makes us attractive to outstanding emerging researchers from around the world.” The Institute of Mathematics at the University of Augsburg covers a broad spectrum of research, from fundamental and applied research to interdisciplinary questions. It is closely networked with the university’s research centres, including the Centre for Advanced Analytics and Predictive Sciences (CAAPS) and the Centre for Future Production (CFP). The Institute of Mathematics offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in mathematics, business mathematics, and data science, the last of which is offered in cooperation with computer science, as well as degrees compatible with studies in education. Students can also undertake a doctorate at the institute. With the public lecture series “Faszination Mathematik und Physik” (Fascination for Mathematics and Physics) and the “Mathezirkel Augsburg” (Maths Circle Augsburg) aimed at school students, the Institute of Mathematics maintains a close connection with the broader public. ad
