What is this research area about?

Data forms the foundation upon which artificial intelligence exerts its transformative impact. Our institute brings together extensive expertise in the fields of computer vision, natural language processing, data engineering, and data-intensive applications in the digital humanities and corpus linguistics. This combination enables us to play a key role in shaping the next generation of intelligent systems, both technologically and methodologically.

A key focus is on research into trustworthy AI. We investigate how data-driven models can be designed to be transparent, explainable, robust and ethically responsible. In doing so, we combine technical innovation with a clear focus on societal values and human-centred design.

Our research addresses issues such as fairness, explainability, security, resilience and the governance of AI systems. At the same time, we are developing methods to deploy AI reliably in complex, safety-critical and highly automated environments.

By closely integrating technical, ethical and humanities-based perspectives, we are contributing to the development of AI that is powerful whilst also meeting the highest standards of accountability, transparency and societal relevance.
