Master degree program: Medical Information Sciences
What to expect
The interprofessional degree program in Medical Information Sciences builds on the bachelor's degree program of the same name (with top marks in the CHE ranking) and is located at the interface between informatics, medicine and the application of these two disciplines in the field of medical informatics. During their studies, students have the opportunity to deepen their basic knowledge by choosing from a variety of courses and to specialize individually. Small group sizes in lectures and seminars offer excellent and individual support.
Highlights
- Campus university with lake and parkland
- Small group sizes in lectures and practical courses offer excellent and individual support
- Renowned computer science faculty in CHE ranking
- Individual focus due to flexible course selection
- Easy start through offers by students of the department (also outside the university)
- Excursions to cooperation partners in research and industry
Contents
The courses deepen the successful study of computer science. In addition to in-depth courses in computer science, the curriculum also includes courses on algorithms and data structures and theoretical computer science to create a deeper understanding of complex issues.
Advanced lectures on software engineering and databases specifically prepare students for professional practice in computer science.
Together with the students of human medicine at the newly established Faculty of Medicine, students gain a comprehensive insight into the fundamentals of medicine and the chance to exchange ideas with medical students.
Advanced application projects and internships offer the opportunity to practically apply the acquired knowledge of medicine with the methods of computer science and to gain experience in independent scientific work.
A wide range of elective courses presents the facets of medical informatics - from the simulation of biological processes and medical signal processing to questions from Big Data and Machine Learning.
Students are free to choose from this range of specializations, allowing them to customize their studies through their own areas of focus.
Career Outlook
Digitization is impacting all areas of daily life, especially in the field of medicine. Graduates of medical informatics programs have excellent career prospects, as outlined in the following fields of work.
In addition to a specialized career, graduates also have opportunities for management positions.
In medical research, medical informatics supports tasks such as simulating biological processes and visualizing medical data. The increasing challenge of handling large amounts of data, as seen in genomics research and neuroscience, can only be efficiently addressed through the targeted use of modern IT technologies.
The development of software-intensive medical systems requires a solid understanding of both medicine and computer science methods. Fields of work include areas such as Mobile Health or eHealth, as well as the development of modern medical products.
The modern healthcare sector increasingly relies on IT systems for the collection and analysis of patient data in both clinical settings and billing processes. Possible fields of work involve the planning, development, and operation of these systems. Potential employers include insurance companies, hospitals, and healthcare authorities.
Thanks to their comprehensive education in general computer science, graduates also have career opportunities in traditional computer science fields.
