ITM Research Interests

© University of Augsburg

The ITM bundles competencies in basic research from molecules to organisms in the subjects of anatomy, cell biology, physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as medical psychology, creating an interdisciplinary scientific environment that is oriented towards the two main research areas of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Augsburg: Environmental Health Sciences and Medical Information Sciences.

The research fields of the ITM cover a broad spectrum:

  • Metabolism: Investigating the biological and environmental causes of overweight, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases, with the goal of developing new prevention and treatment strategies.

  • Immune System: Studying tissue-specific immune responses, particularly in cases of chronic immune activation and autoimmune diseases.

  • Cardiovascular System: Exploring the mechanisms of vascular changes in diseases such as hypertension and chronic cardiometabolic conditions.

  • Cellular Structures and Processes: Researching the molecular mechanisms of signal transduction in health and disease.

  • Nervous System: Analyzing the plasticity of the nervous system under both physiological and pathological conditions to develop new therapeutic approaches.

  • Translation and Technology Development: Developing innovative technologies, including new approaches to using extracellular vesicles as therapeutics and novel methods for characterizing lipid-based vaccines.
