Research Focus

Born in Rinteln 1978, I grew up in the Auetal, a small commune in Lower Saxony. After studying Biochemistry at the Leibniz University Hannover (1999-2005), I received a scholarship within the DFG graduate colleague “Mucosal Host-Pathogen Interactions” for conducting my doctoral project (2005-2008) in the Institute for Microbiology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo). By applying mass spectrometry-based Proteomics, I interrogated the impact of deleting metabolic regulators on protein expression in the pig pathogen Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Furthermore, I assessed the virulence of the generated mutants with the aim to develop an attenuated live vaccine.

2009, I moved for a subsequent PostDoc into the field of Glycobiochemistry at Hannover Medical School (MHH), where I expanded my analytical skills towards glycan, glycoprotein, and glycolipid analytics. In 2011, I was appointed as “Juniorprofessor for Glycoproteomics“ for a period of 6 years. From 2012 to 2017, I headed the Junior Research Unit „Stem Cell Glycomics and Proteomics“ of the former Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH and in 2017, I became “Extraordinary Professor” at MHH.

In 2024, I was appointed as full Professor for Proteomics at Augsburg University with the responsibility to build-up a Core Facility for Protein Analytics at the Medical Faculty. I am intending to also provide glycoproteomics, glycomics and glycolipidomics technologies as service or on a collaborative basis.

Outside of work, I love spending my free time with my family - my wife and three children. I find relaxation in tending to the meadow where I planted fruit trees. I have a deep appreciation for nature and enjoy being outdoors. Jogging helps me stay active, and I especially enjoy walking in the woods and searching for mushrooms.
