Courses with virtual patients for practicing clinical reasoning
At the chair, we offer various courses to support students in practicing clinical reasoning. Using virtual patients, they can learn how to diagnose in a safe learning environment and, above all, learn from mistakes without putting patients at risk. The virtual patients consist of a representation of the case history from initial contact to treatment decisions and thus promote the acquisition of diagnostic skills at different levels of competence. The learning objectives are related to the NKLM objective " apply the methods of medical-clinical decision making" (14a.1.2.3). The focus in the processing of the 15 virtual patients to frequent consultation causes, such as cough, abdominal pain or shortness of breath, is, in addition to identifying and naming relevant findings in technical terminology, on the preparation of relevant differential diagnoses and the identification of appropriate examination and treatment measures. For this purpose, we provide two courses via Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern (VHB):
- Clinical Reasoning with Virtual Patients (introductory course) for medical students in semesters 1-4, medical informatics students.
- Clinical Reasoning with Virtual Patients (advanced course) for medical students in semesters 5 and above.
Courses offered as part of the iCoViP project
As part of the iCoViP project, the current range of 75 virtual patients will be expanded so that 200 VPs will be available in the future. These will be offered in German, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish and can thus be used not only for practicing clinical reasoning but also as preparation for semesters abroad, clinical traineeship or PJ tertials. An overview of the leading symptoms and diagnoses can be found in our Blueprint.

Courses offered as part of the DID-ACT project
The longitudinal blended-learning curriculum with 40 course units and virtual patients on clinical reasoning for students is still being developed, but the first course units are already finnished. In addition, there are already first offers for teachers, if you would like to learn more about how clinical reasoning can be taught and tested.
Starting in this autumn 2021, we are planning pilot deployments at the Faculty of Medicine. Feel free to contact us if you would like to participate. Access via Shibboleth with your university identification code (Uni-Kennung)
