Chair of Palliative Medicine
Welcome to the Chair of Palliative Medicine at the University of Augsburg!
Led by Prof. Dr Eva Schildmann MSc, the research team at the Chair of Palliative Medicine is committed to improving the quality of life of people living with advanced, life-limiting illnesses. Palliative care is not limited to the final days of life. Where needed, it should be integrated into care earlier in the course of an illness. The aim is to maintain the highest possible quality of life and preserve patients’ independence for as long as possible. This includes relieving physical symptoms, providing psychological and spiritual support, and addressing social and ethical concerns. At all times, the focus is on the individual needs of patients, their families and those close to them.
Research at the Chair of Palliative Medicine focuses on the need for palliative care, explores approaches to providing holistic support that addresses the physical, social, spiritual and psychological aspects of illness, and evaluates relevant aspects of care provision.
We combine innovative research with practice-oriented teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration to continuously improve patient care. Our teaching aims to strengthen the communication and social skills of trainee doctors and prepare them as effectively as possible for this demanding role.
We invite you to learn more about our work and get in touch with us. Together, we can contribute to advancing palliative care.
