The regulations governing the licensing of doctors stipulate that the acquisition of knowledge in palliative medicine is a compulsory subject. As part of the model degree programme in Medicine at the University of Augsburg, the subject is taught across several stages of training within various modules (‘Life and Death’, ‘General Medicine I and II’, and ‘Clinical Longitudinal Course II’). In this way, the various subject areas of palliative medicine are linked to overlapping areas of other disciplines, and, in parallel with their growing knowledge and experience between the 4th and 9th semesters, students are introduced to the management of advanced, life-limiting illnesses and the control of their symptoms. They also reflect on their own attitudes towards death, dying and bereavement, and acquire initial practical skills in dealing with difficult communication situations.
In addition to lectures (VL) and seminars (SE), which are prepared for, followed up on and explored in greater depth through online teaching modules (OL) via the Moodle learning platform, the Department of Palliative Medicine contributes to medical training through small-group teaching (KG) and bedside teaching (UaP). Furthermore, participation in a team meeting at the Department of Palliative Medicine, followed by a debriefing in small groups, provides a unique insight into the multi-professional working methods of palliative care teams. The course is run in cooperation with the Vocational School for Nursing Professions.
