Research at the Department of Palliative Medicine

The Chair of Palliative Medicine focuses on research into issues relating to the holistic care of people with advanced, life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families and carers. Our aim is to use scientific findings to improve palliative care and integrate it into standard care in line with needs.

Our interdisciplinary team comprises researchers from the fields of medicine, nursing sciences, social sciences and other specialist areas. We explore complex issues using a broad range of methods – from qualitative interviews and quantitative record analyses to mixed-methods approaches. In doing so, we place particular emphasis on incorporating theoretical models, interdisciplinary collaboration and participatory approaches, in which those affected and members of the public are also actively involved.

A key aspect of our practice-oriented research is that the findings not only contribute to scientific knowledge but also create practical added value – for patients, their families and loved ones, and the healthcare system.
