BePaFo – Citizen Participation in Palliative Care Research

Analysis of existing structures and development of a participatory model with an evaluation framework

Funding: internal funding

Project duration: 1 January 2025 – 31 December 2026

The public should not merely be passive recipients, but should be actively involved in the development and implementation of research projects. This participation leads to higher quality and greater relevance in research; it generates new perspectives and impetus, and makes decisions more transparent and easier to understand. However, Germany lacks nationally established structures and recommendations for action. In the field of palliative care research in particular, there are a variety of challenges to the effective participation of citizens. Furthermore, there is a lack of suitable methods for systematically investigating the effectiveness, benefits and sustainability of participation models.

The aim of the research project is to develop and implement an empirically and theoretically sound participation model, complete with an evaluation framework, for palliative care-related health services research in Germany.

The specific objectives are:

  1. To identify existing participation models in the field of palliative care-related health services research in Germany.
  2. To record and analyse experiences with existing participatory models and evaluation options.
  3. To compile an overview of existing international evaluation concepts in the field of healthcare research and conduct a comparative analysis.
  4. To develop an empirically and theoretically sound participatory model and evaluation concept.
  5. To implement and pilot the participatory model at the Chair of Palliative Medicine at Augsburg University Hospital.
