OpenVPN with Ubuntu

Even with Ubuntu it is possible to configure OpenVPN so that it can be used graphical. To do this the following steps have are needed:

  1. Execute the command
    sudo aptitude install -y network-manager-openvpn-gnome
with an account who has administrative rights. Optional you can also use apt-get or apt or some graphical software as for example Synaptic to install the package.

  2. Change to the folder where you placed the file with the profile and execute:
sudo nmcli connection import type openvpn file vpnbetauaux.ovpn

  3. To eliminate the occuring popups for administrative rights the normal user must get some additional rights:
    sudo usermod -a -G netdev <userid>
Where userid has to be replaced by the account name of the user. This change will be active at least after the next reboot.

Computers which are installed by the DV-Betreuer have normally the first two steps already applied.
