Harrison holds a PhD in History from the Monash Indigenous Studies Centre, Monash University. His thesis traced the more-than-human histories of Birrarung (Yarra River), the stream flowing through the city of Melbourne, and asked how the settler colonial project unfolding there was refigured and resisted by a more-than-human network that included eels, platypuses, mangroves, and flying-foxes, among others. At Universität Augsburg, Harrison is investigating cases of environmental activism since the Industrial Revolution, taking us beyond the contemporary environmentalist movements emerging in the 1960s and 1970s through a series of cases spanning anti-whaling sympathies in the 19th-century Atlantic world, resistance to deforestation in India, bison hunting on Turtle Island, and mining across England and France. He is also developing a project that theorises and historicises uncharismatic species. Harrison has published most recently with History Australia and Environment and History, and has published and presented on topics spanning historical non-human agency, social and gender history, and the music of Taylor Swift. He is a postgraduate representative on the Australian Historical Association Executive Committee, and his PhD thesis was awarded Monash University’s Historical Studies Thesis Prize (2026).
