Global Environmental History and Environmental Humanities offers a wide range of topics. Everything is included, from activism and toxicity to food and animals. Books from the University Library in Augsburg are listed as well as works that are still being acquired for the university collection.

The first chapter of the book "The Toxic Ship: The Voyage of the Khian Sea and the Global Waste Trade" is available for download via the Rachel Carson Center’s Environment & Society Portal.

 

About the book:
In 1986, the Khian Sea set out on a two-year voyage across the world’s oceans, carrying thousands of tons of ash from incineration plants in Philadelphia, in search of a disposal site. The original destination, and then one country after another, refused to accept the waste. The ship eventually unloaded part of its cargo in Haiti under false pretenses, and the remaining waste was illegally dumped at sea. Two employees of the shipping company were ultimately convicted of criminal charges.

In 2025, Simone M. Müller received both the Harold and Margaret Sprout Award, sponsored by the International Studies Association, and the Hagley Prize in Business History, sponsored by The Business History Conference, for this book.
