Seminar Papers
The application period, the required application components as well as the application tool can be found on our homepage at Zur Bewerbung.
Information on the concrete seminar schedule (application and re-registration period, kick-off event, presentation and submission deadlines, further information on the seminar, topics if applicable) can always be found three weeks before the start of application in the respective course on DigiCampus in “Dateien”. Access to this system is required for this.
Seminars (Bachelor)
Ausgewählte Themen des Controlling (held in German)
During the seminar, participants deal with various aspects of controlling (e.g., human resources, production and financial controlling) and the instruments used in these areas (e.g., balanced scorecard, human resource accounting and performance-related compensation). Two persons each form a group to which a topic is assigned. The group assignment is made by the chair. In addition, the participants acquire skills in connection with the preparation of a scientific paper and the presentation of controlling-relevant facts. This prepares them for practical work in the field of controlling and lays the foundation for further scientific work.
This seminar is currently offered every semester (winter and summer semesters).

Controlling im internationalen Kontext (held in German)
In this seminar, participants deal with various aspects of controlling in an international context and the instruments used in this area. Two persons form a group to which a topic is assigned. The group assignment will be made by the chair. In addition, the participants acquire skills in connection with the preparation of a scientific paper and the presentation of controlling-relevant facts. This prepares them for practical work in the field of controlling and lays the foundation for further scientific work.
This seminar is currently only offered in the summer semester.
The grade per group is based on a presentation (presentation of the topic and moderation of a short discussion) as well as on an 18-page seminar paper related to the presentation content.
If you have completed one of the two seminars with a very good grade (1.0 or 1.3), you will receive a guaranteed acceptance to write your bachelor thesis at our chair. Please note that the described application modalities also apply in this case.
Experience in the field of controlling or accounting is recommended.

Seminars (Master)
Methoden der Controllingforschung (held in German)
The seminar imparts knowledge on the application and limitations of some of the methods used in controlling research (experiments, questionnaire surveys, interviews). There will be two to three subtopics per method. Through this seminar, the participants will be prepared for a more advanced scientific as well as a practical professional activity, as they will learn to critically deal with these methods, to design parts of the methods (e.g. questionnaire, interview guide, experimental design) and to interpret the findings generated by these methods in a context-related way. The small group concept allows for an intensive exchange.
Each participant is assigned a research method with which he or she will deal in detail.
Required contents of the seminar presentation are on the one hand the aspects of the basic procedure of the method and on the other hand the creation of a part of the method (questionnaire, interview guideline or experimental design).
Successful participation in the course "Behavioural Controlling" is highly recommended. The seminar is explicitly aimed at students who are interested in further scientific qualification in the form of a doctorate or who would like to deepen their knowledge in the field of scientific methods.
This seminar is only offered in the summer term (PO 2021).
Topics in Behavioural Controlling (held in English)
The aim of the seminar is on the one hand to deepen the understanding of behavioral approaches in controlling. On the other hand, students are given the opportunity to practice a critical approach to scientific texts and to understand the use of different methodological approaches. The seminar thus also trains the analytical skills that are highly relevant both for scientific work and for responsible work in an operational context.
Each participant will be assigned an essay, which they will deal with in detail and on which they will lead the seminar discussion according to the following procedure: Presentation of their own summary and critique of the essay, and discussion of prepared questions designed to challenge the other participants to participate in the discussion with their own ideas and comments.
In addition, participants agree to read the provided essays from the reading list.
This seminar is currently only offered in the winter term.
Controlling in der Praxis (held in German)
The aim of this seminar is to provide insights into the scientifically based solution of practical problems in controlling. Classical problem areas of controlling as well as aspects of behavioral science are included. The analytical skills imparted in the course are highly relevant both for scientific work and for responsible work in an operational context.
In the kick-off event, the participants are assigned to a practice-oriented topic, which they solve using tools they have learned in the course of their previous, scientifically oriented studies.
A presentation of the solution proposal with discussion will follow.
This seminar is currently only offered in the summer term.

The grade is based on the presentation and a 10-page seminar paper related to the presentation contents.
Participation in three PCA lectures in the respective semester is also required for passing the seminar.
Successful participation in a seminar leads to preferred acceptance for a master's thesis.
Experience in controlling or accounting is recommended.
