High-tech in pocket size: Interdisciplinary collaboration on the spiral separator
 
In a joint presentation at the Long Night of Science 2026 in Augsburg, Prof. Janina Bahnemann and Prof. Malte Peter from CAAPS addressed the topic 'Lap-on-a-Chip: Interdisciplinary collaboration on the spiral separator'.
 
'Lap-on-a-chip' systems are miniaturised devices in which complex laboratory processes can be transferred to a microfluidic platform - genuine high-tech solutions in pocket size. Such systems can be used, for example, in diagnostics or in biological separation processes and open up new possibilities for rapid, efficient analysis - for example, of blood samples - directly on site.
 
The example of a spiral separator - a high-resolution 3D-printed system that separates particles or cells along a curved miniature channel - impressively illustrates why interdisciplinary collaboration is so important:
 
  • Technical biology contributes both the biological understanding of the samples and their behaviour in microstructured environments, as well as expertise in 3D printing and design. Targeted data collection is an essential component of valid mathematical models.
  • Mathematics and data analysis help to simulate and optimise flow models and the distribution of individual particles. This includes the development and validation of mathematical models for microfluidic processes, which serve as the basis for simulations. These simulations, in turn, provide input for research in the technical biology.
 
Without the interplay of these perspectives, complex microfluidic systems would often be confined to the boundaries of individual disciplines.
 
The presentation highlighted these limitations whilst also demonstrating how interdisciplinary collaboration facilitates innovation. The topic is not only illustrative but also relevant to the future, as lab-on-a-chip technologies are becoming increasingly important in fields such as diagnostics, environmental analysis and materials research.

 

 

CAAPS at the Public Climate School

With the Public Climate School (PCS), the University of Augsburg and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg, in cooperation with the city of Augsburg, opened a large number of courses dealing with various aspects of climate change to the public from November, 24th to 28th, 2025. This time, CAAPS was represented by a lecture given by Prof. Michael Resch (HLRS). He was invited by CAAPS member Prof. Michael Schlottke-Lakemper to speak on the topic of AI and climate: is that possible?

Artificial intelligence is experiencing a boom with far-reaching consequences for science and society. Experts warn of rising hardware prices and the end of classic high-performance computing. Climate activists are concerned about growing energy consumption, which could even lead to the reactivation of old nuclear power plants. Leaving ethical questions aside, the lecture turns to the question of whether AI is a climate killer – or whether its operation and use can also have positive climate effects.

 

Michael Resch is Professor of High-Performance Computing and Director of the High-Performance Computing Centre Stuttgart (HLRS). He studied technical mathematics and earned his doctorate in engineering. He has headed the HLRS and the Institute for High Performance Computing at the University of Stuttgart since 2003. His research focuses on high-performance computing, the scientific theory of simulation, digital methods in the humanities and social sciences, and the role of digital technology in art.
