Getting rich - and staying rich?! Strategies for sustainable investing from a cross-epochal and cross-disciplinary perspective

“Gier frisst die Zukunft" (eng: Greed eats the future) was the headline of a 2017 Handelsblatt article, one of a series of discussion pieces accusing entrepreneurs and investors of only aiming for short-term profit and thus neglecting investments in ‘healthy’ growth. This focus on quick returns not only jeopardizes the existence of companies, but also economic and political institutions as well as the assets of society as a whole and, above all, the future of coming generations. Implicitly or explicitly, investors are accused of greed and the debate is thus not only morally charged, but also part of a long line of tradition which, from a moral and ethical point of view, asks about responsible management, appropriate wealth and behaviors to be rejected, as well as about precautions and provisions for future generations.
With this in mind, the conference takes a transdisciplinary, transnational and interdisciplinary look at sustainable investing as a cultural practice and decision-making process. It bridges the “epochal threshold” between pre-modernity and modernity and has a cross-border orientation that illuminates sustainable investment practices from a historical, sociological, philosophical and economic perspective. Access via investments opens up a view of strategies for developing and securing resources, their subsidization and privileging as well as their interpretation. Rather than focusing on accumulated capital, this approach views the sustainable safeguarding of wealth as a multi-layered and diverse history of interaction between very different actors and groups of actors.
