The Faculty of Philology and History of the University of Augsburg is seeking to make the following appointment by 1^st of April 2028

The appointment is as a tenured public servant.

The University of Augsburg seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar who has demonstrated academic excellence through internationally visible achievements in research and teaching. The future postholder is expected to represent the field of Ancient History (Greek and Roman History) comprehensively in both research and instruction. Key selection criteria include high‑quality publications and substantial success in securing external research funding. A documented interest in cross‑epochal research and teaching, as well as proven teaching experience, is required. Participation in the teaching activities of all degree programs (BA, MA, and especially all teacher‑training programs within the Bavarian State Examination framework) forms part of the duties associated with the position. The chair collaborates closely with related disciplines (including Classical Archaeology), with professorships specializing in Digital Humanities within the university, and with collections and museums, particularly those located at the Augsburg campus.

The ability and willingness to participate in academic self-administration and digital teaching are required.

In addition to the general requirements under public service law, the prerequisites for employment pursuant to Art. 57 Para. 1 BayHIG are a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, and the special aptitude for academic work typically demonstrated by the quality of doctorate, as well as additional academic achievement through a habilitation or equivalent qualification, which may have been achieved outside of the university sector or through a junior professorship. Leadership of a junior research group is considered an equivalent academic achievement under the conditions specified in Art. 98 Para. 10 Sentence 5 BayHIG.

Appointment as a public servant is possible only up to the age of 52. Candidates over the age of 52 can be employed within the framework of an employment contract under private law.
