The Professorship for Intelligent Perception in Technical Systems (Prof. Dr. Jörg-Dieter Stückler) at the Institute of Computer Science, Faculty of Applied Computer Science, University of Augsburg, is seeking a

Research Associate (m/f/d) as PhD Student

starting on October 1st, 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter), for a full-time position on a three-year fixed-term contract. Remuneration will be in accordance with pay scale 13 of the German TV-L collective agreement, provided that the personal and collective agreement requirements are met. The position is suitable for part-time work.

Your responsibilities:

  • Supporting the professorship in research and teaching in the field of Intelligent Perception in Technical Systems
  • In particular, participating in ongoing research projects in the areas of machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. Possible topics for research are, for instance, world models for robot perception and learning

Recruitment requirements:

  • Master's degree from a university in computer science, electrical or control engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field, completed with excellent (at least “very good”) academic performance. The degree may still be pending at the time of application but must be completed by the time of hiring.
  • Very good mathematical foundations and programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C++)
  • Knowledge of machine learning (incl. deep learning), computer vision, and robotics
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Motivation to pursue a doctorate and contribute to cutting-edge research
  • Strong ability to work both independently and in a research team

Additional qualifications (advantageous):

  • Proven experience in research on machine learning, computer vision, and robotics, as demonstrated by publications in top-rated international conferences and journals such as CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, IJCV, RSS, ICRA, IROS, RA-L, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR.
  • Knowledge of generative AI methods such as transformer and diffusion models

The necessary qualifications must be demonstrated in the application documents by means of appropriate certificates.
