Intercultural certificate for exchange students

The University of Augsburg's International Office is offering a "Study Abroad Experience Certificate". This certificate can be earned by exchange students in all subject areas if they earn 15 points in each of the following four modules:

 

  1. Communication and study organisation
  2. International experience
  3. Involvement in the University of Augsburg
  4. Further education with an international context

 

The aim of the certificate is to integrate international students and to impart basic intercultural skills ("soft skills").

The 60 points, in total, can be earned through participation in various intercultural programmes, most of which already exist at the University of Augsburg and are offered by various organisations (International Office, student groups, Student Committee etc.)

Who can obtain the Study Abroad Experience Certificate?

All exchange students registered at the University of Augsburg can work towards the certificate.

 

Exchange students are:

  • Erasmus+students
  • Students of our partner and cooperation universities
  • Unaffiliated international students studying at the University of Augsburg independently of cooperation agreements for a specified period of time and without acquiring a qualification

 

Exchange students can achieve the certificate provided they earn all required points during the course of their stay at the University of Augsburg. You do not have to prove any previous knowledge in order to work towards the certificate.

The four modules

The certificate consists of the following four modules

 

  1. Communication and study organisation
  2. International experience
  3. Involvement in the University of Augsburg
  4. Further education with an international context

In each of the modules, students can complete different activities and events in order to achieve the required points (60 points in total).

In order to receive the certificate, students must achieve at least 15 points in each of the four modules. The number of points awarded for the individual events is regulated in the charter (see downloads! ).

The events and activities must be completed in one to two semesters (list of examples below).

 

  1. Communication and study organisation:
  • Language course in modern foreign languages at the University of Augsburg, which is not directly connected to the main course of study
  • Language tandem (each language)
  • Initiation and support of learning groups in the faculty at the University of Augsburg
  • Participation in learning groups in the faculty at the University of Augsburg
  • DaF (German as a foreign language) during the course of study at the University of Augsburg, going beyond the requirements of their main course of study
  • German refresher course (before the start of the winter semester)
  • Rhetoric workshop
  • Course on scientific work
  • Workshop on Learning guidance / Study organization / Examination management
  1. International experience:
  • Experience report on studying in Germany (min. 4 pages): Required activity
  • Practical experience on the German labour market
  1. Involvement in the University of Augsburg:
  • Involvement in a student group or in the Student Committee
  • Cooperation in the International Day
  • Attending excursions for international and German students
  • Cooperation in preparing outgoing students
  • Project to support the International Office in supporting exchange students
  1. Further education with an international context:
  • Application training / Preparatory vocational courses
  • Workshop on intercultural communication
  • Attendance at one of the International Office's Country Nights (Länderabende)
  • Active organisation of a Country Night (Länderabend)
  • Course with an international context
  • Course "German Culture from an Intercultural Perspective"
  • Presentation on the University of Augsburg at a school/university abroad
  • Participation in the International Office's Orientation Day

When is the Study Abroad Experience Certificate issued?

The Study Abroad Experience Certificate is issued if the student has earned the required 60 points in one to two semesters and can prove this to the International Office with the types of evidence stated in the charter (before returning to their home country).

The certificate contains the following information and is signed by the management of the International Office and the two coordinators:

  • List of completed courses
  • Number of points earned
  • Time in which the certificate was earned
  • Information on the content and goals of the certificate
