Media laboratory

The Media Laboratory functions as an institution for research and development and provides media services for the Institute for Media and Educational Technology. It operates in developing innovative scenarios for teaching, learning and research as well as their implementation at universities.

Consultation on the Use of Media Technology in Research and Teaching

The staff of the media laboratory advises and supports university members in the following fields:

  • utilizing media and educational technologies in teaching (e.g. e-learning, blended learning, media-aided project learning)
  • conducting research activities (e.g. use of web logs in dissertation projects)
  • contemporary distribution and enrichment of teaching and research materials (e.g. via streaming media of lectures and presentations, enriching PowerPoint presentations with media, live video conferences)

Introduction to Media Design and Production, Media Use

In addition, the media laboratory offers workshops and seminars on a regular basis:

  • Media design and production for researchers, teaching staff and students (e.g. media conception, camera technique, picture design, audio and video editing systems)
  • Introduction in the use of virtual platforms and tools (e.g. learning management systems, authoring tools, social software applications)

Production of Digital Audio and Video Media

The members of the University of Augsburg receive advice and support in:

  • The production of media and creation of virtual scenarios for teaching and learning (E-learning, blended learning, etc)
  • The explication of research projects and results through audience-oriented presentations at scientific events
  • The documentation and digital processing of scientific conferences and events at the university
  • The digitalization of analogue picture and sound carriers as well as reformatting for different applications (e.g. Windows Media, Real Media, MPEG-1-2-4, QuickTime, change from PAL to NTSC)

Cooperations and productions with external partners are also carried out on demand.

Equipment Rental and Media Editing for University Members

Students and teaching staff of the University of Augsburg may rent the technical equipment (video cameras, tripods, microphones, etc) required for media productions, provided that they possess the necessary skills. In addition, several editing workstations for audio and video production are available.

Supporting Students in Media Projects

Within the framework of the accompanying study programm “Problem Solving Competencies” the Media Laboratory provides work space for students where they can experiment with new media and educational technologies. By using the laboratory’s infrastructure students may initiate media projects and develop prototypes from project ideas.

The media laboratory provides the following resources and spaces for the production of analogue and digital media:

  • Studio classroom for lecture and seminar recordings which can also be used for video conferences and telelearning events
  • Television studio for motion picture and sound recording with the possibility to generate special effects, e.g. Blue box
  • Fully-equipped video studio permitting behavioural training with video feedback
  • Analogue video cutting workstation for film post processing (S-VHS standard)
  • Digital video cutting equipment (Apple Final Cut Express, Adobe Premiere)
  • Several mobile camera/recorder units as well as analogue and digital camcorders with accessories (e.g. tripods, lighting suitcase)
  • Mobile real time cutting system (Sony Anycast AWS-G500) permitting live event recordings via the internet (streaming)
  • Mobile video rendition units
  • Stationary streaming video server
  • Central administration of the Learning Management System StudIP and central admission via Digicampus
  • Study plattform for virtual seminars as well as for blended learning courses based on the authoring tool Comvironment
  • Social software platform accompanying courses in the study programm “Problem Solving Competencies” based on the software system ELGG connected with Digicampus
