Application
Application process (general call for applications)
All students apply online via Mobility-Online and upload the required application documents in their workflow on this platform. Once you have completed all required uploads and they have been checked by the International Office, you will receive an email confirmation of receipt.
Once the application deadline has passed, the applications will be forwarded to the respective department, where they will be reviewed and assessed. Students may be contacted by the faculty staff responsible for the selection process to answer further queries regarding their application.
The departments then report the ranking of the applications back to the International Office.
You will be notified by email of the outcome of your application (acceptance or rejection) and in case of an acceptance, your respective placement for a specific partner university by the end of January at the latest. If you wish to accept the offered exchange spot, you must upload the declaration of acceptance ("Annahmeerklärung") in Mobility-Online within a few days (specific deadline will be communicated in the acceptance email).
Application documents
- You may list up to 5 Erasmus partner universities
- You must decide on a period for the semester abroad (winter semester or summer semester)
Please note:
Filling in the online application form itself is quickly done. However, you will then need to complete your personal details in Mobility-Online and upload your documents to finalise your application. You do not have to do this all at once; you can log in to your Mobility-Online account at any time to upload the documents step by step.
It is advisable not to start your application on the last day of the application period!
Please also bear in mind that you will need to provide more detailed information about each priority you select via a questionnaire in Mobility-Online. You should only list universities where you actually wish to study and should only complete the application form once you have gathered the relevant information.
- maximum size: 500x500 pixels, 5 MB
- Please use a recent portrait or passport-style photo in which you are clearly recognisable (it does not need to be a biometric passport photo)

- Students in the 1. semester of a postgraduate degree programme (Master) should upload their "blank" Modulbestätigung from STUDIS or a placeholder document you have created yourself. Please do not upload your Bachelor’s grades again at this upload step!
The questionnaire asks you a few brief questions about your plans for the semester abroad and your preferred priorities (semester dates, faculty affiliation, etc.).
Your answers will be used to check whether your plans for the semester abroad are compatible with your chosen priorities, as placement at a partner institution is only possible if you have researched the options in advance and the relevant partner institution suits you in terms of its language, subject-specific and other requirements.
Please note that the questionnaire is designed to give us a quick overview and there is a character limit for each answer. You should therefore always answer as briefly and concisely as possible.
It will not be possible to make any changes to the information provided in the questionnaire at a later date. Please therefore consider your answers carefully in advance.
You can find a template containing the questions to help you prepare your application questionnaire
Erasmus_Fragebogen_Bewerbung_EN.pdf
.
This is a preview copy – please do not enter anything into this template! Only questionnaires completed directly in Mobility-Online will be accepted.
Please upload your self-written letter of motivation in PDF format (length: 1-2 pages), in which you describe your objectives for the semester abroad and explain your choice of destination country or the priorities you have specified.
The document should be in German, unless German is not your native language. In the latter case you may upload your letter of motivation in English.
At the time of application, you need current and valid proof of your knowledge of the language of instruction. It is not possible to submit this document at a later date.
Please therefore find out in advance on our
detailed website regarding language certificates, which certificates are accepted for the respective language and get in touch with as early as possible, if you have any questions.
Please note that you must submit several language certificates if different languages of instruction apply to the priorities you have indicated, e.g. English forr Finland and Sweden, French for France.
Please combine these certificates into one PDF, as you cannot upload several individual documents.
Application Period
The general call for applications is open during the following period:
12 October until 30 November 2026 (for the winter semester 2027/28 and the summer semester 2028)
Students who have missed the above mentioned application deadline may apply at a later date for any remaining exchange spots. The exact dates for the application for remaining exchange spots and further information about this process will be published on this website after the general call has been concluded (expected to be at the end of January).
FAQs
The application deadline for the academic year 2027/28 is 30 November 2026 at 23.59 (German time). The online application and the upload of all required documents must be completed by this time. Please note that it is not possible to submit documents after this deadline.
You may list a maximum of 5 universities. Please only list universities that you are seriously considering. In subject areas with a high number of applicants – for example, the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration – it is advisable to list 5 priorities where possible in order to improve your chances.
You only need to submit one letter of motivation in which you outline your general objectives for the semester abroad and you explain your choice of destination country or the priorities you have listed, if you like. The letter of motivation should be no longer than 1–2 pages!
In the compulsory application questionnaire, you must provide brief details regarding all your priorities.
Yes, you may apply for both programmes simultaneously in order to increase your chances. Please note that, in both applications, you must indicate whether WeltWeit or Erasmus is your first choice. This information must be identical in both applications. Ultimately, you will receive only one offer of a place in an exchange programme.
If you genuinely intend to complete two semesters abroad (e.g. Erasmus in the Winter Semester and WeltWeit in the Summer Semester), you must clearly indicate this. Otherwise, as described above, you will receive only one placement.
Full-year mobilities at the same receiving institutions are only possible for students of certain degree programmes and in case the exchange agreement with a specific partner university allows this. Please get in touch in good time if you have any questions about whether this might be possible in your specific case.
Two semesters at two different receiving institutions (e.g. Winter semester in Karlstad, Summer semester in Montpellier) are, in principle, always possible; however, during the general call for applications, you can initially only apply for one Erasmus semester. You must then apply for the second Erasmus semester via the allocation of remaining exchange spots. This is to ensure that all students have the chance to spend a semester abroad and to avoid a situation in which one person receives two exchange spots whilst another student receives none at all.
