Recognition of Credits from Abroad
General Information
The recognition of credits obtained abroad is decided by the Examination Board (“Prüfungsausschuss”) of your degree programme. It is important that you familiarise yourself with the topic of recognition and credit transfer and contact the relevant persons in your department well in advance of the start of the semester abroad.
Process Before Your Semester Abroad
All students who wish to have credits obtained abroad recognised for their studies in Augsburg must conclude a recognition agreement (“Anerkennungsvereinbarung”) before starting their semester abroad. Students of the Faculty of Business and Economics use the software VALIANT for this purpose; all other students use the PDF form.
- Students select courses from the host university’s course catalogue. A realistic workload should be chosen (guideline: approx. 30 ECTS per semester), ensuring that the level of the courses corresponds to their current stage of study. Any requirements or restrictions imposed by the host university must also be taken into account.
- Based on their module handbook and the modules still to be completed within their own degree programme, students identify the module or module group in which each course should be credited and complete the recognition agreement accordingly.
- Students contact the responsible academic coordinator in their faculty ("Fachkoordinatoren") by email with their proposal for recognition and provide further information on the courses to be recognised (course descriptions, details of ECTS credits, etc.), along with the recognition agreement. Students of the Faculty of Business and Economics submit this information via VALIANT.
- The academic coordinators review the eligibility of the courses for recognition as quickly as possible and, if approved, return the signed recognition agreement to the students.
Process During Your Semester Abroad
If you have to change your original course selection after arrival, please proceed as follows:
- Remove any invalid recognitions from your recognition agreement. No signature from the academic coordinator is required for this.
- To arrange recognition for the new courses, follow the same procedure as described for the process before the stay abroad.
After your Semester Abroad
- Students complete the application for the recognition (“Anrechnungsantrag”) of academic achievements obtained abroad (provided by the Examinations Office) and submit it together with a copy of the transcript of records from the host university, the complete recognition agreement, and, if applicable, any additional relevant documents to the Examinations Office.
- The Examinations Office forwards the application to the responsible Examination Board, where grade conversion is carried out and the application is formally approved. No further academic review of the courses takes place, as this has already been approved in advance within the recognition agreement. The Examination Board returns the approved applications to the Examinations Office.
- The Examinations Office completes the recognition process by entering the recognised achievements into STUDIS. Students are informed about the recognition via STUDIS. If an application is rejected, students receive a written notice.
- The Examinations Office forwards an overview of the recognised achievements to the International Office (AAA).
Conversion of Grades and Credits
From 1 April 2026, grades for courses completed abroad at the University of Augsburg are converted using the modified Bavarian formula, unless the responsible Examination Board of your degree programme has decided upon and published a different conversion method.
The modified Bavarian formula is:
This formula is universally applicable, as it only requires the highest possible grade in the foreign grading system (Nmax) and the lowest passing grade (Nmin). These details can be found on the host university’s transcript of records. You may use an online tool to calculate the grade.
The calculated grade is then rounded to the nearest grade level in the German system. If the result lies exactly between two grades, rounding is done in favour of the student. Example: A result of 2.6 is rounded to 2.7, but a result of 2.5 is rounded to 2.3
Exceptions to the formula may be decided by the responsible Examination Boards for specific countries (not individual universities) if there are systematic, country-wide differences in grading practices—particularly if the official top grade cannot realistically be achieved. Any such exceptions must be published on your department’s website. If no alternative regulation is specified, the procedure described above applies.
For the conversion of credits from non-European partner universities into the ECTS system, the International Office recommends using the following table .
