Real-world clinical experience provides a much-needed opportunity for deep learning AI algorithms to evolve and improve. Yet, it also constitutes a regulatory challenge, since such potential for learning may essentially change the algorithm and introduce new biases. A related organizational challenge involves the much-needed ongoing oversight and quality assurance by health care providers-cum-deployers, especially during early adoption. Drawing on recent ethnographic work and interviews with radiologists in Israeli hospitals engaged in early AI adoption in healthcare, this talk focuses on the gaps between “lifecycle” regulation and implementation from the perspectives of the deployers, presenting initial findings regarding on-going learning patterns of selective reliance (rather than trust),  and factors affecting successful human-AI teaming in clinical settings.
