Inhalt der Lehrveranstaltung

Are you writing your PhD dissertation and need to improve your written English?

Just because you can read and do research in English does not mean that you are good at written English. Academic writing in English is tricky. Not only is it a question of getting the language right, but it is also learning that writing in English is not merely translating your German thoughts into another language. Writing in English entails a completely different context of structure, planning, argumentation and reader expectation than what a German reader expects. In our globalized world, the awareness of the intercultural aspects of writing in English is gaining increasing importance. Your competence in effective writing methods will help your international readers be able to benefit from your academic research.

In this course, we will meet five times (on 5 Friday afternoons) in the semester and you will have written assignments to complete on your own and turn in online. You will practice writing outlines and summaries, work on the planning process of essays and research papers, and learn about your own personal writing strengths and weaknesses when writing in English. Because the assignments are done individually, there is space for the instructor to help you work on your own specific writing issues.

This course is only open to PhD students who are enrolled in one of the Graduiertenschule programs. Due to the intense amount of writing and correcting work that this course will require, the group will be limited to 6 to 8 students.
