The Green Office is a central component of the University of Augsburg's Green Transformation. It serves as the coordination and steering unit of the University Management Officer for Green Transformation. As a university-wide project, it puts the University of Augsburg on the road to becoming a leading sustainability university. The establishment of the Green Office marks the beginning of this goal, which is enshrined in the University Charter.

Self-image

Our Green Office sees itself as a platform for open dialogue, integration, and participatory engagement to promote sustainable change within the university. Our areas of work are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and cover the fields of research, teaching, transfer, and campus.

As a research institution for the sustainable development of higher education, we establish valuable insights, concepts and solutions that make an important contribution to the implementation of sustainable practices and the promotion of sustainable development at the university.

As a coordination unit, we promote, structure and communicate this process together with key university stakeholders and, in line with the Whole Institutional Approach, regard it as a mission and commitment shared by the entire university community.

Our activities include research into sustainable university development as well as the documentation and further development of sustainability-oriented study programmes and courses. We represent the university in various national and international sustainability-related networks and support the transfer of knowledge and the promotion of student initiatives to increase the university's sustainability performance, and implement equitable, sustainable development in accordance with the goals of the United Nations.

We are currently elaborating a sustainability strategy for the university and are preparing to participate in international sustainability rankings. We are initiating staff training courses on the implementation of sustainable practices and are supporting the certification of laboratories. In particular, we are assisting the university in implementing measures to achieve climate neutrality. To this end, we are conducting projects for the ecological impact assessment of the university’s key units and are supporting the expansion of international cooperation.

In teaching, we classify teaching modules according to SDGs and promote the expansion and restructuring of sustainability-oriented programmes of study. In the area of transfer, we support processes within the framework of sustainability rankings and continuously report on the university's sustainability performance.

The Green Office is aware that a successful transformation into a sustainable university is only possible through the collaboration of all members of the university. Our work is a long-term and ongoing process, always learning and adapting, and is built on a shared responsibility for our future.
