Costs of a semester abroad
A semester abroad always entails additional costs. On the one hand, the cost of living in the host country may be significantly higher than in Augsburg. On the other hand, you will need to cover additional expenses for insurance, visas, language tests or even tuition fees.
It is therefore very important that you form a realistic understanding of the costs you will face before going abroad. You can find an initial overview on the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Another good source of information is the testimonial questionnaires of former exchange programme participants.
To finance these additional costs, there are various options, which we outline below. However, please note that not all students receive a scholarship and that the amount of the scholarship does not usually cover the full costs. You must therefore always be able to contribute a share of the costs yourself.
Scholarships
There are various scholarships available to finance your stay abroad, for which you can usually apply in parallel. However, in the vast majority of cases, you can only receive one of these scholarships. As most of them are partial scholarships, you should always have your own financial resources to help cover the costs of your stay abroad.
Applicants' academic performance plays a very important role in the awarding of scholarships. It is also important that you pursue a well-founded and meaningful study plan abroad and present it clearly, concretely, and precisely in your scholarship application.
You should impress with carefully prepared application documents, a clear and academically focused description of your plans, as well as very good language skills and strong grades. It is also positive if you already have practical experience or are actively involved in activities alongside your studies.

Auslands-BAföG
Students may receive financial support (BAföG) for their study abroad semester. For stays outside the EU, it must be ensured that part of the credits obtained abroad can be recognized towards their studies in Germany.
The semester abroad must last at least 12 weeks in order to be eligible for BAföG funding.
Not all students are eligible for BAföG. Eligibility depends on the financial situation of the student’s family. In addition, students who are not EU citizens must check whether they are entitled to submit an application at all.
The funding includes:
- a monthly allowance plus a country-specific supplement
- a travel allowance (€500 within Europe and €1,000 outside Europe)
- a subsidy towards tuition fees (up to a maximum of €5,600)
- if applicable, a subsidy towards health insurance costs
Applications must be submitted to the student services organisation responsible for the respective destination country.
