So-called Rayleigh–Bloch waves can release enormous amount of energy that can damage technical systems under certain circumstances. They only exist below a precisely defined cut-off frequency; above this they disappear abruptly. Mathematicians from the Universities of Augsburg and Adelaide have recently proposed an explanation for this puzzling phenomenon.

In the recently published Shanghai Ranking 2024 (Academic Ranking of World Universities, ARWU), the University of Augsburg achieved very good results in three fields of research. In the fields of mathematics and atmospheric research, the university was ranked between 201 and 300 out of 1,000 universities worldwide. Educational research at the university was ranked between 301 and 400.

Prof. Dr Malte Peter, professor of applied analysis at the University of Augsburg, has been named a life member of Clare Hall, one of 31 colleges of the University of Cambridge.

Den Gavin Brown Best Paper Prize 2021 der Australischen Mathematik-Gesellschaft erhielt der Mathematiker Prof. Dr. Malte Peter als Mitglied einer internationalen Autorengemeinschaft für die Veröffentlichung im „Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans“. In dieser Veröffentlichung stellten die Forschenden Berechnungen vor, wie Ozeanwellen in den randlichen Eiszonen, die hunderte Kilometer breiten Gürtel von Eisschollen um die beiden Erdpole, an Energie verlieren.

Die Professoren Werner Schneider und Peter Welzel wurden vom Universitätsrat für weitere zwei Jahre im Amt bestätigt. Der Mathematiker Malte A. Peter tritt am 1. Oktober 2019 die Nachfolge des Informatikers Wolfgang Reif an, der nach acht Jahren im Amt die Universitätsleitung verlässt.
