Short bio
Lars Wietschel studied industrial engineering at the University of Augsburg from 2011 to 2017. From 2013 to 2016, he was a student assistant in the ResourceLab research group at the Chair of Prof. Dr. Axel Tuma. From 2017 to 2022, Lars Wietschel was a research assistant in the research group ResourceLab at the Chair of Production & Supply Chain Management. During this time, he wrote his doctoral thesis on the strategic planning of the bioeconomy in Europe, taking into account economic, environmental, and social criteria, with the title “On the Design of a European Bioeconomy that Optimally Contributes to Sustainable Development,” and successfully defended it on April 7, 2022.
Since 2022, Dr. Ing. Lars Wietschel has been a postdoctoral researcher in the research group ResourceLab at the Chair Production & Supply Chain Management of Porf. Dr. Axel Tuma. Mr. Wietschel's research is characterized by interdisciplinarity with a focus on the planning of economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable as well as resilient value and supply chains. A particular focus is on analyzing the consequences of climate change for raw material supply chains and planning of optimal adaptation strategies. He combines methods of the field of Industrial Ecology (especially life cycle assessment and material flow analysis) with methods of Operations Research (especially multi-criteria optimization). In university teaching, Lars Wietschel designs, develops, and holds various courses at the bachelor's and master's level. Among others, he is involved in the courses “Production and Logistics,” “Future Energy Systems,” and “Resource Efficiency & Resilience” and regularly supervises bachelor's and master's theses. In October 2025, Mr Wietschel organized and co-directed the international summer school entitled “Systemic Risk, Cascades and Tipping Points” in Split, Croatia, in collaboration with several European and non-European universities and institutions. For his outstanding scientific achievements, Mr. Wietschel is awarded the Viermetz Science Prize in 2025.
