SDG-Mapping in Education

As part of the implementation of the University of Augsburg’s sustainability strategy, a systematic survey of courses in relation to the United Nations  Sustainable Development Goals, (SDGs) was conducted for the first time in the winter semester 2025/26. The aim of this process is to identify the subject areas in which university teaching contributes to sustainable development and to show how the SDGs are addressed across various disciplines.

The assignment of courses was carried out during the regular module handbook update on DigiCampus. Lecturers from all faculties were able to independently link their courses to one or more SDGs. There was no limit to the number of goals that could be selected, allowing the full diversity and multidimensionality of the courses to be represented. The assessment was based on the official descriptions of the 17 SDGs, as well as on the SDG overview page of the University of Augsburg, which provides concise descriptions, thematic keywords, and examples from teaching. The Green Office and the Chair of Prof. Dr. Andreas Rathgeber provided support for both content-related and technical questions concerning the SDG assignment.

The following evaluation shows how many courses (as of October 2025) have been assigned to each of the individual SDGs. Currently, approximately one-third of all courses offered are included in the SDG mapping. The graphic illustrates which sustainability goals are particularly prominent in teaching and provides an overview of the thematic scope of the university’s course offerings.

Assignment of courses with regard to the SDGs based on Digicampus registration (as of 10/2025) This treemap graphic uses proportional rectangles to visualise how many events at Digicampus were assigned to a specific SDG. The colours of the rectangles correspond to the official colours of the various SDGs. Below is a list of the number of events per SDG: - SDG 4 367 - SDG 17 235 - SDG 9 195 - SDG 13 147 - SDG 10 123 - SDG 11 122 - SDG 16 120 - SDG 12 118 - SDG 3 96 - SDG 8 83 - SDG 5 77 - SDG 15 61 - SDG 7 42 - SDG 6 32 - SDG 14 22 - SDG 1 19 - SDG 2 15 © University of Augsburg

The SDG assignment in teaching is conceived as an ongoing process. In the future, lecturers will continue to have the opportunity to assign their courses to the SDGs or update existing information. The results are incorporated into the University of Augsburg’s sustainability reporting and systematically highlight the contribution of teaching to achieving the global sustainability goals. At the same time, students gain a transparent overview of which courses address the SDGs and can purposefully choose those that align with their interests in the field of sustainability. Further information on documenting courses in relation to the SDGs can be found here.
