QoMEX 2025
At the 17th International Conference on Quality of Multimedia Experience (QoMEX 2025), held from September 30 to October 3 in Madrid, we were represented with two papers, both collaborations between our chair and colleagues from the University of Würzburg. Filip Simonovski from our chair presented the paper “Swiping, Fast and Slow: Assessing the QoE of Short-Form Videos via Crowdsourcing” [1]. The study introduces a framework to realistically evaluate the Quality of Experience (QoE) of short-form video platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels while preserving the interactive mobile experience. Using this setup, we conducted two crowdsourcing studies to analyze how waiting times—such as initial delay and stalling—affect QoE. We found that users are three times more likely to swipe away during an initial delay than a stall, yet stallings are rated more negatively. These insights help guide better content delivery and improve user experience on short-form video platforms. Fabian Poignée from the University of Würzburg presented the paper “Hello everyone: Realistic Crowdsourcing-based QoE Assessment of Multi-party Video Conferencing”, which was co-authored with Prof. Dr. Michael Seufert [2]. The study introduces a realistic crowdsourcing approach to evaluate the QoE in multi-party video conferencing. By recreating authentic three-person Zoom meetings with simulated bandwidth drops and stalls, the researchers gathered user ratings under various network conditions. The results show that short disruptions have little impact, while longer stalls or sustained low bandwidth clearly reduce perceived quality. Interestingly, participants tolerated stalling more in live calls than in streaming scenarios, highlighting the unique dynamics of interactive video communication and offering valuable insights for improving conferencing applications.
