In the summer semester of 2017, the Iranian-Canadian sociologist Prof. em. Haideh Moghissi (York University, Toronto), a world-renowned expert on human rights issues, culture and politics in the Middle East, and ethnicity and migration in a global context, came to the University of Augsburg.

Haideh Moghissi discussed the challenges facing modern societies in the light of migration, integration, Islamism and Islamophobia. She also addressed the issues of equal rights for women and the women's rights movement in Islamic contexts as well as on a global level.

Haideh Moghissi has Iranian roots and is professor emeritus of sociology at York University in Toronto. Before she left Iran in 1984, she was a co-founder and board member of the National Iranian Women's Union. Her English language publications include 7 monographs and anthologies as well as numerous contributions to books and scientific journals. Her book Feminism and Islamic Fundamentalism: The Limits of Postmodern Analysis (Oxford University Press, 2000 and Zed Press, 1999) won the Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award and has been translated into several languages. Haideh Moghissi was the director of several international research projects. In 2011, she was awarded a Pierre Elliot Trudeau Research Fellowship and in 2015, she received the Status of Women Award of Distinction from the Ontario Confederation of Faculty Associations.
