The doctorate is a further qualification in the academic career through a written contribution to progress in science (dissertation) and an oral examination (disputation). The written work is supervised by a professor ("Doktorvater" or "Doktormutter"). At some faculties, this individual supervision is supplemented by a graduate school. In principle, graduates with an above-average degree from a Master's, Magister or Diplom degree programme or an equivalent state examination are eligible for a doctorate. Successful completion of the medical examination is sufficient to obtain the degree of Dr. med. .
