The Erasmus+ project “Religions for Ecology – Facing Global Challenges: Environmental and Peace Education in Interreligious Cooperation for Teacher Training” explores how interreligious educational approaches can contribute to addressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and social conflicts.

The peace education project is based on the assumption that sustainable ecological transformation cannot be achieved through technological innovation alone, but requires the formation of social values and awareness-raising processes. Within this framework, religions are understood as culturally and socially influential systems of meaning that have the potential to foster environmental awareness, a sense of responsibility, and peacebuilding. The project aims to develop innovative concepts for pre-service and in-service teacher education that integrate interreligious learning with environmental ethics, climate protection, climate resilience, and issues of climate justice. Through the collaboration of partner universities from Germany, Austria, Spain, Albania, and Malaysia, the project brings together academic research, interreligious perspectives—particularly from Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism—and educational approaches in order to develop sustainable and practice-oriented models for teaching and learning. A particular focus is placed on promoting a shared environmental ethical awareness as well as strengthening solidarity, justice, and interreligious dialogue.
