Chairs at CIHR

Since the establishment of CIHR, digital health research has emerged as a central area of interdisciplinary research. As part of the High-Tech Agenda Bayern, four research professorships have been secured and integrated into CIHR to strengthen the emerging research focus on 'Digital Health Research and Artificial Intelligence' in the social, communication, economic, and legal perspectives.

The Chair for Behavioral Health Technology conducts research on the use of modern computer technology (such as smartphones, wearables, virtual reality) from a psychological perspective to assess and improve the well-being and health of individuals.

The Professorship of Behavioral Health Technology is an active part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences at the University of Augsburg.

The Chair of Digital Health Communication investigates how new technologies (such as wearables, health trackers, or intelligent medical devices), new media, and new possibilities of data processing (such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, automation) are changing the perception, selection, processing, and impact of health-related messages.

What new opportunities arise for doctors, healthcare professionals, and the healthcare industry from these developments?

The Professorship of Digital Health Communication is an active part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences at the University of Augsburg.

The Chair of Digital Health & Medical Decision Making examines healthcare from an economic perspective to enable efficiency improvements and resource allocation, thereby achieving improved medical care. The use of (digital) data for informed decision-making and the application of behavioral science insights based on empirical data play a central role.

The Professorship of Digital Health & Medical Decision Making is an active part of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Augsburg.

The Chair of Civil Law, Liability Law, and Law of Digitalization is part of the university's research focus "Digital Health Research and Artificial Intelligence." The research conducted at this chair focuses on various areas, including civil law, medical and health law, and data protection law.

Regarding the background of the research focus:

The research focus "Digital Health Research and Artificial Intelligence" aims to address the socio-technical trend, especially of the last decade. Digital health-related data are processed using artificial intelligence methods to support processes related to health, illness, healing, prevention, and well-being. Four areas can be identified that comprehensively encompass social, psychological, communicative, economic, and legal dimensions, in addition to information technology and medical-technical foundations.

These four areas are as follows:

  • Support of Medical Decision-Making and Therapy Recommendations
  • Optimization of Non-Medical Processes in Healthcare Delivery
  • Development and Implementation of Personalized Plans for Patients and Prevention Recommendations
  • Algorithm-driven Online Environments and Apps for Users outside of Medical Care

These four areas take into account the aspect that the functionality of technology depends on cooperation and interaction among individuals, including doctors, medical staff, patients, and users.

At the University of Augsburg, the medical-technical perspectives are already well represented and are being integrated in the focus area of "Medical Information Science" within the Medical Faculty. This aims to promote professional exchange and collaborative cooperation.
