The new Gender Equality Strategy for the period 2026-2030 was adopted by the Collegium of the University of Augsburg on 13 May 2026. It focuses on advancing gender equality, particularly within the academic and research sectors of the university.

A key milestone of the strategy is the faculties’ formal commitment to gender equality objectives. The faculties have agreed on target figures for the proportion of women and have developed faculty-specific measures and goals. They have committed to implementing these measures and documenting their progress through 2030. In addition, the summary of the strengths and weaknesses analysis highlights successful initiatives to date and identifies future areas for action in gender equality, each accompanied by a defined implementation timeline. The strategy also includes fact sheets presenting current data on the proportion of women across the faculties of the University of Augsburg.

On 28 April 2026, the panel discussion “Career & Care? New Perspectives on Work-Life Balance in Academia” took place, featuring a keynote address by Prof. Dr Christine Bratu. The event was organized in cooperation with the Family Service, the Graduate School for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Equal Opportunity Office, and the University of Augsburg Graduate Center.

Prof. Dr Christine Bratu is Professor of Philosophy with a focus on Gender Studies at Georg August University Göttingen. She earned her doctorate from LMU Munich in 2011 with the dissertation “The Limits of Legitimate State Action: On the Relationship between Liberalism and Perfectionism.”

On 28 April 2026, the event “Career & Care? New Perspectives on Work-Life Balance in Academia” will take place.

The programme will open with a keynote address by Prof. Dr Christine Bratu, entitled “Obstacle Course” (Wettlauf mit Hindernissen), in which she will advocate a new, philosophically grounded understanding of work-life balance. This will be followed by the panel discussion “Rethinking Work-Life Balance”, where experts from different status groups, central university units, and fields of practice will discuss current challenges and explore concrete approaches towards a more equitable academic culture. A networking reception following the discussion will provide an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and connect with one another.

The Campus Parents Initiative will offer childcare services for the duration of the event.

On the following day, 29 April 2026, a complementary workshop entitled “(Prospective) Parenthood and Academia: A Space for Reflection for Researchers and Pathways Beyond the Work-Family Conflict” will further explore key questions surrounding (prospective) parenthood and academic careers. The workshop will be led by Dr Sarah Czerney of the inter-university network Motherhood and Academia (Mutterschaft und Wissenschaft).

In addition, the workshop will provide a confidential space for participants to reflect on personal experiences and discuss potential strategies for addressing the challenges of reconciling family responsibilities with an academic career.

The University of Bayreuth is hosting this year’s annual Bavaria-wide networking meeting for current and former female/FLINTA scholarship holders of the Bavarian Program for the Realization of Equal Opportunities for Women in Research and Teaching. The event will take place on July 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the University of Bayreuth.

The day is intended to foster exchange and networking among current and former scholarship holders, providing an opportunity to discuss career perspectives, establish connections, and strengthen sustainable, cross-disciplinary networks.

The program will include a keynote on “Gender Aspects as a Career Booster and Criterion of Excellence,” and experienced researchers from the University of Bayreuth will share their insights as part of a panel discussion.

On November 27, 2025, communication scientist Prof. Dr. Lena Frischlich gave a lecture on “Science-related Hostility as a Professional Risk.” She explored how such hostility arises, the forms it can take, its consequences, and strategies researchers can use to protect themselves.

The growing importance of science communication, combined with the widespread use of social media, has made researchers more visible—but also more vulnerable. While new public spheres and diverse sub-publics offer opportunities for participation and the strengthening of democracy, they also carry risks, including online propaganda and hate speech.

Violence against women in Germany has reached a new high. Narratives that downplay gender-based violence as “relationship incidents” of isolated individuals no longer hold. This Lunch Talk series uncovers the settings and dimensions of gender-based violence and examines how power relations, institutional structures, and intersectional experiences shape it. Violence against women is perpetuated structurally – not only through male perpetrators, but through the system itself.

The talks focus on concepts of masculinity, state institutions, digital spaces, and society as a whole, highlighting individual, institutional, and legal courses of action as well as responsibilities.

On 25 September 2025, the University of Augsburg, in collaboration with the EU Liaison Office for Research Organizations (KoWi), will host an information day for early-career researchers.

The full-day event provides a compact overview of current funding opportunities in research at both the European and national levels. Various research and funding organizations will present their programs and institutions, offering tips on successful grant applications and job applications. The event will be held in English.

On Wednesday, 4 June 2025, the reading “Equality as a Life Mission – A Functional Academic Biographical Narrative” with Prof. em. Dr. Hildegard Macha took place. The event was offered and organized by the Officer for the Advancement of Women in Science and Art, Prof. Dr. Susanne Kinnebrock, by Prof. Dr. Martina Benecke, the contact person at the University of Augsburg for cases of sexual harassment and sexualized violence, and by the Office for Equal Opportunities.

Prof. Macha was a professor of Pedagogy and Adult Education at the University of Augsburg for many years. She also served as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Women’s Officer, founder of the Gender Center Augsburg, and advisor to companies, the German Armed Forces, churches, and other organizations on the implementation of gender equality policies. She is the author of the book “Equality as a Life Mission”, in which she provides insights into various areas of her life in the form of an academic biographical narrative.
