Research - Protein Analytics

© Mia Mielenz
Our research group is passionate about understanding how proteins and glycans shape cell function and diseases. With mass spectrometry-based proteomics, xCGE-LIF-based glycan analysis, bioinformatics, glycobiochemistry, and cell biology, we study their roles in cell communication, development, cancer, and rare congenital disorders of glycosylation.

In parallel, we are developing innovative analytical workflows and establishing a Proteomics Core Facility at the Medical Faculty of the University of Augsburg to support interdisciplinary biomedical research.

Our main research areas include:

Quantitative proteomics, subcellular proteome analysis, secretomics, and the investigation of posttranslational modifications.

Structural characterization and sensitive analysis of N-glycans and glycosphingolipid-derived glycans using xCGE-LIF.

Investigation of tumor-specific glycan and glycosphingolipid signatures to identify novel biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets.

Research on ER-associated glycosylation processes, particularly C- and O-mannosylation, and their biological functions in development and disease.

Cover of Cell Reports Medicine

We are excited to share that our group’s work is highlighted on the cover of the August issue of Cell Reports Medicine. The artwork, entitled “Sweet clues in sour places,” illustrates our team’s discovery that while multiple glycans are detectable in tumors, only nLc4 (highlighted in red) is selectively increased in urine. This creative visual metaphor reflects the identification of nLc4 as a promising non-invasive biomarker for bladder cancer detection.
