Research - Molecular Cell Biology

Research Projects

Research focus:
  • Investigation of the molecular effect of extracellular vesicles (EV) on the development and progression of metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and their comorbidities
  • Development of EV-based biomarkers for the clinical diagnosis of environmental diseases
  • Drug testing in pre-clinical disease models, including those for diabetic nephropathy

Methods:

  • Isolation and molecular characterization of EVs from tissues, cultured cells and body fluids using various methods such as differential ultracentrifugation, size exclusion chromatography, immunoprecipitation and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA)
  • Application of different techniques and models for the functional investigation of EVs
  • Use of cell biology-, biochemistry- and molecular biology-based approaches, including genetic modification of cells, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), western blot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), quantitative RNA and micro RNA analyses including RNA sequencing and single nuclei RNA sequencing
  • Performance of proteome analyses to investigate the protein composition of EVs
  • Application of microscopic techniques such as fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy and laser capture microdissection for the visualization and analysis of pathologies
  • Biomarker validation in clinical samples
  • Metabolic phenotyping in various pre-clinical models

New position paper on vesicle research released

The new position paper on the minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles (MISEV) has been released. Our team member Konxhe Kulaj has made valuable contributions to the position paper as part of the MISEV Consortium. https://isevjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jev2.12404

Doctorate successfully completed

Congratulations! Dr. rer. nat. Konxhe Kulaj has successfully defended her doctoral thesis "Adipocyte-derived Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Disease: Regulators of Insulin Secretion with Diagnostic Potential". Her research demonstrated that extracellular vesicles can enhance insulin secretion by delivering specific proteins to pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, her findings emphasize the promising role of these vesicles as diagnostic tools for metabolic diseases.

Publication Award of the Faculty of Medicine

We are delighted to receive the 2023 Publication Award of the Faculty of Medicine! Our publication "Adipocyte-derived extracellular vesicles increase insulin secretion through transport of insulinotropic protein cargo" was published in Nature Communications in February 2023 and investigates the influence of extracellular vesicles from adipose tissue on pancreatic insulin secretion.

Invitation for a plenary talk at the MOVE international EV conference

Fantastic news! Our dedicated PhD student, Konxhe Kulaj, has been selected by the MOVE (MObility for Vesicles research in Europe) Consortium to give a plenary talk at their annual conference in Malaga. This presents a great opportunity for her to discuss her research with international experts in the field of extracellular vesicles.

Sept. 30, 2023

DZD international Research School

We take pride in the accomplishment of our PhD student, Sneha Prakash, who earned the opportunity to participate in the international Diabetes Research School organized by the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) in Hamburg. She presented her research project on diabetic nephropathy through a poster presentation addressing queries from esteemed experts in the field.

Feb. 1, 2023

Doctoral examination successfully passed

Hats off to Dr. rer. nat. Michaela Bauer for the successful defense of her doctoral thesis "The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Diseases." Her research centered on the characterisation of extracellular vesicles from adipocytes, studying their changes in obesity, and understanding their impact on metabolically active cells, especially pancreatic islet cells.

Jan. 18, 2023

New publication on the impact of adipocyte-derived EVs on insulin secretion released

In our recent article in Nature Communications we could demonstrate that extracellular vesicles from adipocytes influence insulin secretion. By transferring a specific cargo of proteins to pancreatic beta cells, vesicles from obese adipose tissue can enhance the secretion of insulin, contributing to the normalization of blood glucose levels.
