Wolfgang Buermann studies climate change and associated impacts on ecosystems, the carbon cycle and biodiversity. In his research, he utilizes a variety of Earth system models including global circulation, atmospheric transport and biosphere models. He also makes extensive use of satellite data, such as global vegetation products.

With his work, Buermann has been able to make a significant contribution towards a better understanding of vegetation dynamics under climate change.

He has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters including in the journals Science, Nature, and PNAS, and won more than $2M in research funding from US (NASA), EU, UK and German funding agencies.

Academic Experience

Wolfgang Buermann received his scientific education mainly in the Anglo-Saxon area. In 1997 he graduated from the University of Connecticut as a Master of Science in Physics. He then earned his doctorate in the years 1998 to 2002 at the Department of Earth and Environment Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher from 2002-2005 at the University of California, Berkeley and from 2005-2007 at the University of California, Los Angeles. From 2007 to 2012, Buermann was Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then researched and taught as Associate Professor of Land Surface - Vegetation Modeling at the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, England. Since October 2018 he has held the Chair of Physical Geography with a focus on climate research at the Augsburg University.
