Research activities of chair of Materials Engineering

The research activities of the Chair of Materials Engineering cover the entire process chain of fiber-reinforced ceramics (Ceramic Matrix Composites - CMC). They are aimed at a comprehensive understanding of CMC materials, with a particular focus on the influence of process parameters and application conditions on material properties and failure behavior.
  • In the "CMC Processing" working group, existing processes for the production of fiber-reinforced ceramics are adapted and improved and new processes are developed.
  • The "Interfaces & Interphases" working group deals with the influence of the fiber-matrix adhesion on the failure behavior of CMC materials, whereby the bond is specifically modified, e.g. by fiber coatings.
  • The "Sustainable CMC" working group is investigating the production and use phase of fiber-reinforced ceramics with regard to energy and resource efficiency.
  • Based on all experimental work, the "Digital CMC" working group develops material models for CMC materials in order to be able to simulate the failure behavior of the composites under load as well as temperature and media influence. The working group also deals with the digital description of the entire CMC process chain.
