The series Altertumswissenschaftliches Kolloquium continues with a talk by Dr. Annalize Rheeder who will present that YouTube can be a valuable resource in researching traditional crafting processes.

Work conducted by the Digital Roofs project is providing fascinating new insights into production traditions at Olympia. Through the use of new technology including a 3D scanner and handheld digital microscope, new information regarding the materials and production techniques used have come to light. Interpretation of the evidence has been greatly aided by videos of traditional craftsmen at work posted on YouTube. Documentation from different regions of the world including South America, the Mediterranean and Asia demonstrate a variety of techniques and workflow but also common principles which govern the work. It is now possible to identify changing production traditions at Olympia from the archaic period into late antiquity and the effect these had on the ensuing architecture of this important Panhellenic sanctuary dedicated to Zeus.
