Den Vortrag zum Auftakt der interdisziplinären Vortragsreihe "Klimaresilienz - Forschung und Transfer" des Zentrums für Klimaresilienz hält Prof. Sarah Cornell vom Stockholm Resilience Centre.

The more that scientists understand about climate change, the more we recognize the role of life in shaping the dynamics of the Earth system. Huge efforts have been made to assess the scale and pace of human impacts on the planet, especially those of the wealthiest, most industrialized and highest consuming societies, and to predict and influence the pathways that result from either action or inaction in response to these impacts. The idea of ‘the Anthropocene’ captures many aspects of today’s global changes. I will reflect on this idea, taking both a macro perspective and a more person-scaled / person-centered viewpoint. With today’s complex systemic changes in mind, I will also present some of our current thinking about ‘Earth resilience’. Bluntly speaking, resilience research is often framed as asking ‘how much change can the system take?’ But what does it mean to represent today’s global predicaments in that way? The recognition of the always-adapting relationships between life and climate – understood in Earth system science as the links and feedbacks between biosphere and geosphere – presents new challenges for both knowledge-seekers and action-takers.
