Three Studies in Cruelty: unter diesem Motto zeigt das AnglistenTheater Mitte Juli drei kurze Dramen zweier bedeutender Autoren, die sich auf jeweils unterschiedliche Art und Weise mit Gewalt, politischer Repression und absoluter Kontrolle über andere Menschen auseinandersetzen.

Die vier kurzen Szenen von Harold Pinters "Mountain Language" führen das Publikum in ein ungenanntes Land, in dem den Bergbewohnern der Gebrauch ihrer eigenen Sprache untersagt ist, in dessen Gefängnissen die Häftlinge misshandelt und ihre Frauen und Mütter, die sie besuchen, aufs übelste beschimpft und belästigt werden.
Im Gegensatz zum realistischen Modus von Harold Pinters Stück sind Becketts kurze Einakter "What Where" und "Catastrophe" (das Vaclav Havel gewidmet ist) abstrakte, stilisierte Parabeln, die das Publikum mit einer Welt konfrontieren, in der die widerspruchslose Zurichtung von Menschen von gnadenlos-autokratischen Impresarios inszeniert wird. Diese beiden Stücke könnten deshalb auch unter dem Motto "Two Studies in Obedience" stehen.

English version: "Three Studies in Cruelty" is the motto the AnglistenTheater team have chosen for three short plays by Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett, which could be called “political” in the widest sense of the word, insofar as they deal with intimidation and the exercise of absolute and arbitrary control over human beings.
The four short scenes of Harald Pinter‘s play Mountain Language are set in an unspecified country, a military dictatorship, in which the language spoken by the people who live in the mountains is “forbidden”, where prisoners are routinely tortured, and their wives and mothers, who are desperately trying to visit them in prison, are insulted and harassed by soldiers and guards.
In contrast to Pinter’s “realistic” mode, Beckett’s two short one-act plays "What Where" and "Catastrophe" (which comes with the dedication “For Vaclav Havel”) are abstract, stylized dramatic parables, in which ruthless, autocratic impresario figures exert absolute control over their fellow creatures, demanding their unconditional and unquestioning obedience. "What Where" and "Catastrophe" are not only "Studies in Cruelty", but also "Studies in Obedience".
